If you are prone to oily skin and large pores, chances are you have a few blocked pores on your nose and chin area. Although not easy to eliminate, the appearance of these blocked pores can be dramatically reduced using a few simple techniques.
We have talked previously on this blog about the importance of firstly, not using any “oil free” products on your oily skin. Oil absorbs oil, so instead, using oil based skincare will leave the skin clean and oil production balanced, instead of the skin being stripped of oil by regular products and then fighting to replace it – by producing even more oil. You get the picture.
By using natural, specially blended, oil based products, oily, shiny skin can become more balanced and matt, blemishes, spots and acne calmed, pore size can be reduced and blocked pores diminished. We recommend starting with the Oil Cleansing Method, details and directions of which can be found on the oil cleansing post within this blog. This method cleans and balances the skin, draws out blocked pores and impurities from deep within the skin and the sunflower oil within this cleanser is truly awesome at reducing the size of large pores, especially on the t-zone. For further details on the Eden Be Natural Raspberry and Mandarin Oil Cleanser, please click here.
The use of a toner everyday will remove the last of the oil cleanser, we recommend our Orange Blossom and Witch Hazel Toner for the purpose of blocked pores as it contains key ingredients that are antiseptic, astringent and anti-inflammatory, and the use of this toner will further help to clear congestion, toning and firming the skin, further reducing the size of enlarged pores.
To enhance this regime, it is recommended to use a face mask once a week. We recommend French Green Clay, further details of which can be found here. Green Clay is highly effective against oily, problem skin, spots, acne and inflammation. Soothes and calms troubled complexions, removes impurities and tones and tightens the pores. This face pack also contains a lovely dose of Sandalwood Powder, which is detoxifying, antiseptic, antimicrobial, astringent and balancing. It is great for dry skin and also helps treat skin problems such as acne and blackheads, psoriasis and eczema. This face pack gives your skin a really deep down clean, leaving you feeling extra fresh and gorgeous! Regular steaming of the face is also an excellent way to open up the pores, dislodging oily build up and sebum so that it can be removed more easily. Try it once a week as part of your skincare regime.
Finally, finishing with an oil based moisturiser, such as Joy of Imperfection, will further help to normalise large pores. It is also antiseptic and balances sebum production, whilst protecting, moisturising and hydrating the skin throughout the day. A further bonus of using our oil based moisturisers is that you will find that, after leaving the cream to soak in for a few minutes, your make up will go on like a dream, leaving you with a super fresh, even, dewy appearance that lasts all day.
Try it for a minimum of four weeks religiously and see a real difference in pore size, a reduction in the amount of blocked pores and get a shine-free, even hydrated look with the minimum of fuss. What’s more, you will find that our natural, palm oil free, vegan, oil based products are also very economical, with one pot of moisturiser lasting for months as you only need a small amount each time. Good luck.
Spots and troubled skin is something I have known since I was a teenager and I guess, like most people with this problem, I assumed my skin would clear up of it’s own accord as I got older, people always say “you will grow out of it” right?! Well, in my experience, and I have since discovered, many other peoples, this is not always the case. In my thirties, and with some first signs of getting older beginning to appear, I was still getting spotty, oily and congested skin. It was quite a challenge to find a natural product which would help my troubled complexion whilst at the same time address the needs of an older skin type. Most products were targeted at helping spots or fine lines and wrinkles – not both!
So after taking the decision to make my own products in order to target this issue specifically, Eden Be Natural Pure Organic Skincare was developed. By switching to 100% natural skincare and making some small changes to my diet, I have been able to reduce my skin problems dramatically. Our Peaks and Valleys Moisturiser, one of the first products created, and one I regularly use, is a gorgeously scented blend of organic oils and essential oils, created specifically to target spots, acne and congested skin whilst at the same time smoothing out those fine lines and first signs of ageing. So how does it go about doing this? Well, firstly, oil absorbs oil, so if you have a particularly oily, shiny complexion, this can actually be greatly reduced by applying a specific mix of non-pore clogging oils to the skin, essentially balancing the amount of oil the skin produces, leaving you with shine free, matt skin. This might go against everything you have always been told about greasy skin, that you should always use an oil-free moisturiser, thus stripping the skin and creating a vicious cycle where your skin actually produces more oil to compensate! Try it for yourself, it really works.
Secondly, Peaks and Valleys Moisturiser is packed full of some amazing natural butters and oils which are clever enough to give a shine free complexion, heal spots, acne and congestion AND smooth, hydrate and plump up the skin so that fine lines and wrinkles are reduced, brilliant! Taking a closer look at a couple of these ingredients, Hemp seed oil for example is one of these vital ingredients. It is absorbed easily and is a good source of essential fatty acids (Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9, as well as well as Vitamins A, C, E and D, and beneficial amounts of amino acids). It helps to rebalance large-pored and oily skin to a more normal skin type and penetrates down into the skin, helping the skin to become softer as it also has a moisture-retaining effect. The GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid) content makes it ideal for psoriasis, eczema and acne treatment products. Hemp Seed Oil has unique anti-inflammatory properties that are not often found in other oils. This, added to its antioxidant properties, allows Hemp Seed Oil to help heal and detoxify your skin, as well as even out your skin tone. Regular use of Hemp Seed Oil can help reduce any skin discomfort. It soothes and restores dry, damaged skin, leaving it smooth, silky, and moisturised which in turn helps to slow down the ageing process.
Palmarosa essential oil can also be found in this cream, and this contains excellent skin care properties as it moisturises the skin and balances hydration levels. It balances sebum production so useful for all skin types and keeps the skin supple and flexible. Excellent for acne as it is a cellular regenerator and helps with old acne scars and pits. It can also help fight infection in wounds and prevent scarring. Palmarosa oil is cytophylactic in nature, which means that it promotes the growth of cells and the recycling of cellular matter. Thus, it helps repair the damages done to the body by ageing, like natural wear and tear, as well as from wounds and acne. Palmarosa helps calm the mind and has an uplifting effect. It is beneficial for stress, anxiety and nervous exhaustion and can also help if you are feeling vulnerable and insecure, which, lets be honest, if your skin is bad can make you feel this way!
Of course, this is a closer look at just two of the key ingredients included in this fabulous moisturiser, to demonstrate how it works and to try and help you to decide if this could be the right product for your needs. Take a look here to see the full ingredients list for this product, all our ingredients listings are complete, nothing else is added or hidden away. So, if you are struggling with a more mature skin type that is still plagued by spots, acne and blackheads which could also do with some seriously deep moisturising to smooth out developing fine line and wrinkles, try Peaks and Valleys face and neck cream and see how it could help you have smoother, clearer, plumper, shine-free skin in a matter of weeks. Fabulous stuff!
Eden Be Natural products rely heavily on the amazing healing properties of essential oils. Each has its own unique qualities and benefits and we choose each one very carefully for its specific properties and skin healing abilities. Frankincense Essential Oil is one such oil and we use this exceptionally valuable essential oil in three of our best selling products. So what makes this delightfully scented oil so fabulous?!
Frankincense oil is derived from the resin of a small tree in North Africa and has a really special, clear, fresh, slightly camphorous scent with its earliest uses known as being burnt on altars and ritual use in temples. Frankincense has the exceptional ability to slow down and deepen the breathing, producing feelings of deep calm so is often used as an aid to meditative practices. Frankincense is particularly useful with regard to the lungs and can also help calm coughs as it is a known pulmonary antiseptic. It has also been known to be helpful to those suffering from asthma and other diseases of the chest, and can help calm the emotions and periods of anxiety and depression.
Frankincense is highly regarded in skincare, and is known to be exceptionally valuable for more dry, mature skin types. It is incredibly toning to older skins which may have lost some elasticity and can help slow down the appearance of wrinkles. It has even been suggested that this wonder oil may reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles which have already formed!
It helps to improve general skin tone and condition and I have experienced great results when using this oil for oily skin where it can also help to heal spots and blemishes. This was one of the reasons we included this amazing oil in our Utopia Moisturiser where it blends incredibly well with the MSM to produce a gorgeous cream which is suitable for use on all skin types, young and old, and helps combat skin problems such as spots, scars, eczema and wrinkles. Blended together this way they promote a clear, fresh, even unblemished complexion suitable for use by all.
It can also be found in our A Smile Never changes Soap Bar and Moisturiser, where it blends wonderfully with the walnut oil and evening primrose oil to produce some highly effective wrinkle fighting skincare products.
Try this amazing oil today and experience for yourself the power of natural healing for your skin.
One question we get asked frequently here at Eden Be Natural is “I have spots/acne/troubled skin. How can I get rid of it?”
Well, the truth is, there is no straight forward magic remedy. If there was, and I knew about it, I would be one very rich lady…
The reality of it is, that in my own personal experience, it is a matter of trial and error, persistence and effort. I have always had spots, blocked pores and oily skin for as long as I can remember. As a teenager, I do not think there was cream or potion that I did not try. I spent many hours and a considerable amount of money on off the shelf and over the counter treatments that promised the earth and in reality, delivered very little. It became something that as I got older, I just kind of put up with. When I was in my late twenties, I developed a relatively mild, but very uncomfortable nonetheless, form of adult acne. It was quite surprising the impact this had on my confidence, I hated having my photo taken and would never wear my hair up as most of the largest, most uncomfortable cyst-like spots were in my hairline, jaw and neck.
I tried every conventional remedy I could get my hands on. Prescription medication did not help, and at times it felt it was making the problem worse. It became so uncomfortable and unsightly around the time that I started to do quite a bit of yoga, the practice of which is known to be quite detoxifying. The more I did, the worse it got and I began to realise that perhaps putting hundreds of chemicals on my skin daily and not paying much attention to what I was putting in my body may be the root of my troubles.
The process of elimination took time, but I persevered and eventually narrowed it down to three things that were clearly contributing to my skin issues. Firstly, I ditched conventional skincare. Completely. I had a keen interest in aromatherapy and natural health and over a period of many years, learnt how to make my own skincare range, which in its early days was specifically designed to treat the skin problems I was experiencing. I used nothing on my skin except for the soaps I had made, Mandarin and Raspberry Cleanser, Orange Blossom and Witch Hazel Toner and either Peaks and Valleys or Joy of Imperfection Moisturising Creams. The effects were surprising. I noticed after a few weeks of continued and exclusive use that my skin was less oily, scars were fading back, and breakouts were diminishing. For the first time in years, I started to wear less make up and feel more confident. I still got spots, no miracles here, they just weren’t as big as they used to be and they cleared up more quickly.
Secondly, I started to look at my diet and after doing a bit of research, found out that it might be beneficial to stop eating dairy products. This was hard. I did love cheese! However by stopping eating dairy products completely, my skin continued to improve, and it was starting to improve more quickly now. The huge spots I was getting in my hairline, neck, chest and back were definitely smaller and less frequent. I thought more about what I was eating generally and drank more water. Things were really starting to improve and it felt great.
Finally, I stopped drinking alcohol. No, no more cheese and wine evenings for me… However, it was at this point that I felt I had finally cracked it. The huge, painful cyst-like spots had stopped. Completely. I did still get small spots on my face, however it was clear this was hormonal as they followed a monthly pattern. They were tiny in comparison to what they were and easily dried up by using the skincare regime mentioned above. My skin looked clearer, fresher and I could even have days where I felt confident enough to wear no make up at all.
Ok, I wont lie, I still have lapses and have the odd glass of beer nowadays, and so long as I don’t over do it, it doesn’t affect me too badly. I try not to get too stressed as well, as stress definitely makes things worse. I can honestly say I have never looked back and if you are currently experiencing problems with teenage or adult acne I would recommend you try the above. It certainly helped me. So, no magic remedy. Lots of time and some effort required. But totally worth it. And I can tie my hair up now and feel good about it. And that feels great.

In this post, I will be sharing a little more information on one of the less well recognised ingredients we use in our pure, organic skincare range, MSM.
So what is MSM and where does it come from? It is a nutritional form of sulphur and is formed naturally as a by product of algae growing in the oceans. This by product is then evaporated and returns back to earth in the rain and becomes highly concentrated in plants watered by rain such as pine bark, aloe, grasses etc. MSM is extracted from these plants and is totally natural and vegan. MSM is also found in many vegetables, however, during cooking, most of the MSM is lost and so it believed that many people could benefit from supplementing.
I first came across MSM a few years ago whilst researching natural pain relief options for arthritic conditions and TMJ disorder. I noticed that the supplement MSM was frequently mentioned and that drinking a dose of it each day was known to alleviate the pain and inflammation associated with these disorders. The reason being is that the sulphur in MSM helps the toxins and waste, that lead to inflammation, to be removed from the body, leading to a reduction in inflammation and pain.
As I continued my research, I became quite excited by this new discovery as it appeared that pain relief was just one of many uses of this interesting form of nutritional sulphur.
MSM is also known to increase energy and has a detoxifying action on the body, it allows nutrients to be absorbed more easily due to its ability to remove waste products from our cells. Sulphur is also an essential component in the formation of cartilage, collagen, keratin and elastin. Collagen and keratin are both super important for healthy skin and nails. Sulphur is essential to maintain nail health and remove deficiences and to keep your hair healthy, looking longer and thicker.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about MSM for us here at Eden Be Natural, is that MSM promotes blood flow which helps to speed up the healing process of wounds and scars. And if all this wasn’t enough, MSM is known to improve general skin health and complexion, helping you to achieve healthier, more radiant skin. With this in mind, we have added a lovely dose of MSM to our Utopia Moisturiser. On a personal level, I found that Utopia has really helped with my troubled complexion, my skin looks fresher and more even when I use it, and it really does help to heal my skin of break outs and any dry skin or scars I may have at the time. Many customers have commented on how it does seem to help with many skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, scars, a seemingly endless list!

At Eden Be Natural, we believe in only ever using the most natural methods for looking after your skin. We also believe that these methods need to be totally effective. Our Raspberry and Mandarin Oil Cleanser is a brilliant example of this, as it is made using only the finest, organic oils, specially chosen and blended to be highly effective with the minimum of fuss.
Many people I speak to at first about this method of cleansing their face are, quite naturally, concerned about using oils on their skin, as they think it will further exacerbate their oily complexion. This is especially so if they have a skin condition such as acne or some other troubled skin type. The first thing I tell them is that this is not the case for several reasons, the first one being that oil actually absorbs oil, so by using our oil cleanser, an oily, shiny complexion will be dramatically reduced. that it is best to use a product which is oil-free and removes all oil from the skin. As we have found here, this creates a vicious cycle of stripping the skin, which actually leads to the skin producing more oil to try and replace the lost oil and so you skin gets worse.
Secondly, our Raspberry and Mandarin Oil Cleanser has been created using a special mix of oils which each have a specific use and benefit which is suitable for any skin type, especially troubled skin. Grapeseed oil is mildly astringent and antioxident and is brilliant at tightening and toning up the skin, so is great for not only acne but also wrinkles.
We add sunflower oil as it’s pore reduction qualities are highly valuable if like me, you have large pores around your nose, chin and forehead.
Castor oil is an important ingredient in this product, because it’s the castor oil that actually does the cleansing, it’s got anti-inflammatory properties and it is a great skin healer. It’s also fantastic at drawing toxins from the skin. Great if you have stubborn blackheads and congested skin.
Jojoba oil and raspberry seed oil are added for their moisture retaining, nourishing and softening properties, leaving the skin protected and with a moisture retaining lipid barrier.
Finally, we add a touch of mandarin essential oil, this is so refreshing and smells delicious! It is also great at clearing oily, congested skin.
The best time to cleanse with oil would be in the evening, and for maximum effect, allow yourself a few minutes to gently massage the oils into the skin and give them time to really work. Use a really warm wash cloth to remove the oils, preferably leaving the cloth over the face for a little while so that the heat melts the oil and steams your pores, but not too hot to scald the skin. Leave it there till it cools, perhaps lying down and relaxing for a few minutes. When the cloth is cool, you can repeat this step or gently remove the oils with your cloth, essentially pulling all the oil, dirt and make up from your skin.
This product is also really great at removing eye make up too, and will leave your skin fresh, hydrated and super clean. Click here to order.
At Eden Be Natural Pure Organic Skincare, We endeavour to do this in a variety of ways, however, for the purpose of this post I will focus on why we feel it is vitally important to avoid palm oil in the production of our skincare range.
The consequences of palm oil production was initially bought to my attention by my then young daughter many years ago. She had become increasingly concerned about the palm oil industry’s seemingly catastrophic destruction to vast areas of rainforest and the subsequent effect this had on our environment and it’s wildlife, in particular the orangutan population. So, my daughters wish to avoid palm oil in her skincare products became one of the reasons Eden Be Natural all began a few years ago!
Avoiding palm oil is actually quite a difficult task day to day as it pops up in so many products from biscuits to margarine, oven chips, soap, and detergents to name but a few. In fact, demand for palm oil has undergone phenomenal growth in recent years and its use is expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050. Avoiding palm oil is made all the more difficult as products can currently label palm oil as containing vegetable oil which only goes to complicate matters further.
So, why is it so important to avoid the use of this common, everyday oil, or, in the very least, opt for sustainably sourced?
Deforestation - palm oil plantations in places such as Borneo and Sumatra are replacing rainforest at an alarming rate, an area the size of 300 football fields each hour, thats 6 football field sized areas every minute. Over 90% of the orangutan habitat has already been destroyed during the last 20 years. The precious hardwood is logged, the rest is set on fire. Often the local people are displaced by this destruction, and are then employed by the plantation owners for very little pay in dangerous conditions. Such a plantation will only last 20 – 50 years before the soil is drained and of no further use.
Orangutans - It is estimated that 6 – 12 orangutans are killed each and every day for palm oil, either killed in the deforestation process or wander displaced into the plantations where they are killed or sold on the illegal pet trade or used in the entertainment industry. Data has shown that over 50,000 orangutans have already died as a result of deforestation in the last two decades. Experts warn that at the current rate, these beautiful creatures could be extinct within 3 to 12 years. It is believed that most of their jungle habitat will be no more within 20 years. Orangutans however, are not the only animal species impacted by the industry. Sumatran Tigers, Asian Rhinoceros, Sun Bears, Pygmy Elephants, Leopards and Monkeys are also under threat.
Ecosystems - Everything in the ecosystem is connected, remove one species, you will take out another that is connected. For example, many tree species can only germinate once passed through the gut of an orangutan, so remove the orangutan, those tree species will also disappear. In turn, the animals which rely on those trees for food will die as a result. so as this delicate ecosystem is slowly destroyed, this then impacts heavily on the climate, sea levels, weather patterns and it increases the chance of of natural disasters.
By purchasing products that contain unsustainable palm oil, we are contributing directly to rainforest destruction, wiping out animal and plant species and creating a large-scale ecological disaster. We cannot change the past, but our actions now can create a better future.
A couple of weeks back, my husband and I nipped over to the Cambridge Picture House to catch the new film documentary Blackfish. I first heard about this film many months back from the actress and activist Hayden Panettiere on twitter and had since read much about it, so by the time it hit UK independent cinema, I felt I absolutely wanted to contribute to the number of people taking time out to see this brave, thought-provoking piece of cinema history.
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a 12,000 pound orca who performed at Sea World Orlando, that has over the years killed several of his trainers, most notably Dawn Brancheau in 2010. The film seeks to expose the truth about Sea World and marine parks across the world, via factual evidence, autopsy reports and tearfully frank interviews with former trainers and employees of Sea World.
I have never personally been an advocate for such places but was still quite shocked by what I learnt here. The film describes how these majestic animals were first captured many years ago and the psychological trauma that this experience and the subsequent captivity they endure appears to impact on such a social, sentient creature as the orca. Through a series of interviews and clips, we are transported through the darker side of Sea World they would not wish us to see, witnessing the frustration caused to these beautiful creatures through boredom and loneliness, who live out their shortened lives in a concrete pool when they are built to swim hundreds of miles a day in the wild. It appears that we are often lead to believe that captive orcas have a much longer life span in captivity than they would in the wild due to the veterinary care they receive, however this does not corroborate with what the experts tell us, that female orcas can quite happily live up to a hundred years old in the wild, reaching a mere 25 – 30 years in captivity.
A part of this film that I was not expecting to find particularly shocking was how the trainers at Sea world are often kept in the dark about the risks to their own lives they appear to be taking on a daily basis. I had no idea how many people had actually been killed or injured by these captive orcas, the figures are truly astounding, even more so when you consider that there are no reports of an orca ever killing a human in the wild. Ever. This is very telling of the frustration these usually peaceful creatures must feel about their captivity, frustration which often leads to such violent attacks on what is essentially the hand that feeds them.
It is my opinion that the makers of this film should be applauded for the sensitive and intelligent manner in which they present us with the facts, without resorting to purely using intentionally shocking or graphic imagery, indeed, it appears many of the disturbing images have not been included. It is simply educating us with the facts so we can make an informed decision on whether we support such places or boycott them.
I urge you to take time out to watch this film at some point in the near future, it perhaps won’t change your world, but it may just change your mind on where you spend your hard earned cash in the future.

An exciting new product was added to our range this week, the brilliantly effective Moroccan Lava Clay Face Pack! Moroccan Lava Clay is deeply cleansing and is sourced from the caves of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, where it is extracted and then left to dry in the sun for several days. The use of Moroccan Lava Clay has been coveted for centuries for it’s unique skin nourishing properties. It is a 100% pure, natural clay powder, absolutely packed full of trace minerals such as Magnesium, Iron, Silicon, Sodium and Potassium which are required for skin renewal and tissue repair. It is gentle enough for really sensitive skin, and may even be beneficial for skin troubled by acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
So why is it great for our skin to use this face pack regularly? Moroccan Lava Clay is deeply cleansing and giving your skin regular deep cleaning removes sebum, dead skin cells and other pore clogging impurities, allowing the skin to breathe and renew itself efficiently. Without regular deep cleaning our skin is far more prone to premature ageing, dryness, spots and blemishes and any subsequent skin treatments we use will not work as efficiently on congested skin. Moroccan Lava Clay will leave you feeling really clean, fresh and with improved skin texture and appearance.
The true beauty of this product is that not only is it a wonderfully effective face pack, it also makes a brilliant face and body wash for sensitive skin and even works wonders as a shampoo leaving your hair super soft and incredibly shiny!
